Best Time to Search for a New Job?

When is the best time to search for a new job? The quick answer is now. You should always be looking out for yourself and your family. Employers need to do what they need to do to keep their talent (e.g. health insurance, professional development, competitive wages) and if it is not cutting it for you, you need to get off your butt and see what is out there. Loyalty has lost its luster in the corporate world. If your employer doesn’t value your contributions, there are others that will.

The COVID-19 pandemic has really proved that people can be productive from home. Many employers are now incorporating a more flexible work arrangement. The media is reporting that there are a ton of jobs available and employers are having a hard time filling them. Why?! I think you know the answer. I don’t know about you but working from home is a blessing. You can get a days work done in an hour. You don’t have someone breathing down your neck. You can work in your pajamas.

Ever read The 4-Hour Workweek?

I’ve been a remote worker for over 15 years. My mistake is the whole reason I’m writing this article. For years (too many years) I didn’t think I could find another remote position. So I stayed put. I told myself I would rather take a paycut than have to go into the office. True story, it happened! There was nothing that was gonna make me leave my job until the day I found out our contract was coming to an end, I had no other option than to find me a new job. When your family depends on what you bring in, here are 8 simple ways to start getting your finances in the green. You need to put aside your comfort, ego or insecurities.

I am extremely terrified of interviewing. It wasn’t until someone told me that it was just a conversation that I was able to renew my view about interviews. In fact, I scheduled 3-4 interviews per week, for a few weeks. It’s a numbers game, eventually an offer will come. I’ll admit some were tough or awkward, but I can assure you that one thing you will definitely learn is who you don’t want to work for. When the right one comes along, it’ll be just like old friends getting back together again. Employers are increasingly recognizing the values of diversity, inclusivity but mainly fit. One could be the smartest, most skilled person but they don’t work well with the team. Have you ever worked with someone like that?

3 Quick Interview Tips

  • You know what you know – don’t fake it
  • Be positive – use joyful words and always be optimistic
  • Enjoy your conversation – have fun, it really is a just a conversation… with your new bestie? maybe?

Let me add this tidbit for those of you that have been in that same position for a long time. If you aren’t getting at least a 3% salary increase every year, you need to find a new job. Statistics say that changing jobs will net you, on average, a 10-20% increase. Go do yourself a favor.

This does not only apply for remote work! Not everyone will be allowed to work from home due to the nature of their job, but you can bet that benefits are being realigned to hire or keep the workforce. Just for that reason alone is why you should see what’s out there.

The best time to be looking for a new job is now. Get out there and see what kind of opportunities you can find. You got this!

Ask yourself… Would I spend 1 hour (Just 1 Hour) for a conversation that could possibly lead to a 10-20+% increase in the amount I take home?
