My First Day as a Spark Delivery Driver Review

What do you do when you need money to buy something you really want or need to Pay Down Debt… but you don’t make enough money? You go and find a side hustle. So I’ve been looking at some options and found one. Here is my Spark Delivery Driver review.

What is a Spark Delivery Driver?

There are a few names Spark Driver, Spark Delivery Driver, Walmart Spark Driver… Call it what you want but it’s most known for shopping and delivering for Walmart. There are additional gigs that you can do for Sam’s Club and Advanced Auto Parts that I’ve also seen on the Spark Driver App.

How Long Does it Take to Get Approved as a Spark Delivery Driver?

Getting approved requires a background investigation. It could be really quick but since it is a popular gig, they may be backlogged. It took me nearly 6 months to get approved. You must select a zone to fulfill but sometimes the one closest to you may be full. Select another zone and get your paperwork filled out. You can change your zone once you are approved.

What Do You Do as a Spark Delivery Driver?

There are two types of offers: Delivery or Shopping & Delivery. For delivery, you just pull-up into a pickup stall (curbside pickup) and the associate will load your vehicle and then you go and deliver the order to the customer. For shopping & delivery, you have to basically shop for the customer and then go and deliver the goods to them.

My First Day

I accepted 4 Offers and here’s how it went…

Offer 1: Shopping and Deliver

I was hoping for a curbside pickup but I must have been a little trigger happy and clicked on an in-store pickup. It was my first offer and I was like oh-sh*t… So I hopped out of my car and started shopping. As my luck would have it, I couldn’t find a 3 pound bag of sweet onions and so I had to substitute it with a 3 pound bag of yellow onions.

The app wasn’t very efficient and was taking me from one end of Walmart to the other. There were more items that needed to be substituted and a couple of things that just weren’t in stock.

I felt really guilty that this customer wasn’t gonna get the things they ordered. There was a clock as well that I was trying to race against on the app. It seemed like it was trying to keep me on track, but I felt really rushed.

After getting the 18 items, I checked out, loaded up and went to deliver it a few miles away. It was my first delivery in the books and I was ready for another, but I had to take a break because I had something else to do.

Look at that! I can work when I wanna work. And no one is gonna tell me what to do, except my wife. ☺️

Offer 2: Delivery

Back in action a few hours later. There were some offers and I saw one pop up as a curbside pickup. And it also said the order was ready. So I went and parked in a pickup stall and let the app know that I was there. Five minutes went by and nothing, so I had to call pickup and let them know I was waiting.

Five to ten minutes later and I’m still waiting and they can’t find the order. The order wasn’t ready and after 30 minutes went by, I cancelled the order because it still wasn’t ready. I called support and they said that they’d compensate me for my time. We’ll see…

Offer 3: Shopping and Delivery

Next… I saw an order and clicked it. Darnit! It was another in-store pickup. But it wasn’t too bad this time. It was some water, frozen food and some ice cream. I was able to find everything this time, however, the checkout line was super long.

On top of that, although the drop off was 6 miles (straight shot), the total was more like 8 miles because you make a left here and another left there and a right after, etc.

Offer 4: Delivery

I thought I’d do one more before I called it quits for the day because I had to take care of some chores at home.

The order said pickup was at 2:15pm but it wasn’t ready and I got there early. Five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes went by and the status hadn’t changed. I had to wait a full 30 minutes before I could cancel or my pristine record would get dinged.

After 30 minutes, I cancelled it and went home.

Lessons Learned

  1. Know the store numbers so you don’t accidentally go to the wrong one
  2. Know what you are signing up for whether its just a delivery (curbside pickup) or shop & delivery
  3. Know how many orders are tied to the offer, don’t get suck with 10+ stops
  4. Know how many miles you have to travel, gas is expensive
  5. Know how much you are gonna make for the offer, McDonalds may pay more 😊
  6. While you wait, you might as well make TikTok’s for your other Affiliate Marketing Side Hustle as well

Summary

It was a very interesting experience and I’m looking forward to doing more in the near future. If everything went perfectly, I could have easily made $100 in 2 hours. Instead I made $100 ($50 for deliveries and tips, $20 for time compensation and $30 bonus) over 4 hours. A lot of time was idle and waiting.

I would definitely recommend this for anyone. It’s so awesome that companies are able to give regular people, like us, the opportunity to do this instead of contracting it to delivery companies. What a time to be alive.

And to think that if you are on the other end of the order, you can have someone else shop for you and deliver it to you while you lay in bed scrolling on TikTok.
