Bucket List of The South

What’s the first thought that comes across your mind when someone mentions the south? I’ll be honest, I think of hot, unbearable muggy weather. It’s a good thing that this bucket list of the south doesn’t happen in the summer and I recommend everyone take in these items whether you are from the south or not. This should be a part of anyones bigger bucket list.

College Football

If you are questioning college football as a bucket list item, then you’ve never seen College Gameday on ESPN. In my opinion and probably the whole entire south, it is bigger and much more entertaining to watch than NFL. It’s even better being there in the stadium amongst all them crazy SEC fans.

Making it to a college football game is like a right of passage. You must partake in all the festivities. For example, if you attend an Alabama football game, you wear white and/or crimson colored clothing, roar out “Roll Tide!” everywhere you go, meet some awesome people tailgating on the Quad, get a glimpse or high five your favorite plays and maybe legendary Coach Saban on the Walk of Champions, attend the game in state-of-the-art Bryant-Denny Stadium, walk “The Strip” after the game which is kinda like a block party with bars, restaurants and retail shops to get the merch before you head home.

The energy at a game is much different than any other sporting event I have ever attended.

NASCAR

I just got back from the GEICO 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway. It was my first race and Hot Damn it was awesome!

I’m not sure if every track provides a Garage Experience but I’d definitely recommend it. It allows you to cross the track into the infield where you get to see the teams working on their cars, there’s food and drinks, stuff for the kids to do, stage performances, you get to write on the finish line and much much more.

The sound of those engines and the crowds, the smell of the burning race fuel and rubber, the expressive colors of the cars, the vibrations when those cars pass you at over 180+ miles per hour, the cheering you do and guess what, no one cares cause they can’t hear you.

Absolutely great for people watching! I seem to see a lot of people wearing jean shorts. So if you have a pair, don’t be ashamed to flaunt it.

You might want to spring for a fan suite where you can get air conditioned comfort with catered food and unlimited drinks. I needed a tan, so I opted in for the grandstand seating.

Hey you might want to pitch a tent and camp over too, it’s all part of the experience.

Action really starts to pick up after the first 60 laps, so stay till the end if you can and watch these guys get nuts for the win.

There are many tracks you could go to but Talladega Superspeedway is the Biggest and Baddest :).

I’m already thinking of maybe going to the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

Bass Fishing

The last thing on this top 3 bucket list of the south is landing a monster Bass. I’m a little biased to saltwater fishing, but I’m still down for a big fight.

Lake Guntersville State Park is one of many lakes in the south where you can get your fish on. But if you are new to this, the best way to do this is to hire a guide.

They’ll have everything you need to land that Bass. All you have to do is bring your fight on. I have yet to find me a guide. Please let me know if you have any recommendations. I’ll definitely share the one I find.

At this point, the only freshwater fish I can catch is a Bluegill and Tilapia. LOL!

Summary

College Football is always on Saturday, Nascar Cup races are on Sundays and you could fit in fishing on a Friday. If you choose to tackle this in a weekend, make sure to bring a hat and whole lot of sunscreen. This is my top 3 items in my bucket list of the south. I’ve been living here for 10+ years and I’m only 2/3rd’s done. Let me know if you plan on completing it or have done it already.
