Let me tell you a story about what we found in this mysterious green box…

Where are we going…

My wife and kids seemed very anxious to leave the house. They aren’t ever that excited unless we are going on vacation.

As I’m driving aimlessly waiting for my next direction, my wife continues to look intently at her phone.

She directs me to make a right and drive about a mile down and look for a little dirt parking lot on my left. I shake my head and ask, “Where are we going?” She replies, “No worry!”

We soon pull up next to a trail. Cool, we hadn’t gone for a nature walk in a bit.

As we start our walk, she continues to gaze at her phone. About a mile in, I turn to look at her and she’s gone and so are the kids. They are in the bushes just a few steps back. I yell “Snake!” and all at the same time, they shout, “SHUT UP!”

What they found…

“What are you guys doing?”, I asked and they quickly replied, “We’re geocaching, Dad!”

Geocaching is like a treasure hunt, I gathered.

My wife was looking at the Geocaching app on her phone which had coordinates of where that geocache was. On the app were clues for that particular geocache to help you locate it. Some folks that had already found that geocache provide additional clues and logged about their experience.

Well, the kids found an ammo box in the hole of a tree trunk and pulled it out to the open so we could see what was in it.

It was full of nicknacks and small toys, figurines and a little scroll of names of who found the geocache. Pretty cool! Depending on the creator of the geocache, they may encourage you to take an item and replace it with something else. What is also super cool is that you can also create and list your own geocache.

Out of the 4 that we set out to find, we only found 2. They are in the slide show of photos above.

On another day, the geocache led us to a hiking trail that we never knew existed in our own neighborhood. We attempted to find 3 on that trail and found 0.

There was also another family looking for geocaches as well.

If I had never knew about geocaching and accidentally found one, I would probably not know to leave it where I found it. Finders Keepers right?! I’m willing to bet that some of the geocaches go missing because of that.

Tools? Do We Really Need Tools

No, however, some geocaches could be a little challenging. Here are some tools that may help you to find them.
